Then plan on attending the Transfer Fair this Wednesday, September 14th from 12:00-1:30 in the Student Center. 45 schools are scheduled to be represented. There will be local schools and some out of state schools as well. Remember it is never to early to start talking to schools you may want to transfer to. Transferring is a process, not an event.

Altavista Center's Summer Hours

The CVCC Altavista Center’s Summer hours are adjusted each summer according to its evening classes. If classes are held in the evening, the Center is open.

For the Summer 2011 hours, the Center is open Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the Center is open from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. On Fridays, the Center closes at 12 noon.

Placement testing for math and English classes is available daily. However, students should allow 2 ½ hours for the complete exam and if coming in the evening, schedule testing times according to closing times.

A computer lab is available for student use and to the general public when no classes are scheduled in that lab; however, priority is given to CVCC students.

Students who are interested in enrolling for the fall semester are encouraged to seek academic advisement early at the Center at the Altavista Office Park. The Center advises student whether they attend the main campus or the Altavista Center, accepts payment for all classes and provides financial information.

CVCC Appomattox Center

CVCC Appomattox Center

The CVCC Appomattox Center offers day and evening programs in credit and non-credit modes and specialized training in workforce development for business and industry. Delivery systems include traditional classroom instruction as well as Web-based/Internet courses, and compressed video (interactive television). The Appomattox Center, located in the Carver-Price Educational Complex on Business 460, opened in 2007.
An academic advisor is on-site and available on an appointment basis to assist with general academic advising as well as program planning and scheduling of classes.
The complete COMPASS test is available at the Appomattox Center on an appointment basis during the hours of operation (allow at least two and a half hours). Students should call the Center to schedule an appointment and for appropriate testing fees.
The computer lab is available to the public at times when no classes are scheduled in the lab. Priority is given to CVCC students during these open times.

CVCC Appomattox Center hours are 8:00-5:00, Monday through Thursday and 8:00-12:00 noon on Friday. The Center is open evenings for scheduled classes and appointments. Phone: (434) 832-7200.

Federal Loans now available at CVCC

CVCC will start participating in the Direct Student Loan Program this fall.

Central Virginia Community College participates exclusively in the Federal Direct Student Loan Program which includes Subsidized Student Loans, Unsubsidized Student Loans, and Parent Loans. The Federal government is the lender in the Direct Student Loan Program. Students and parents interested in federal student and/or parent loans will be required to apply through the Direct Student Loan Program and complete master promissory notes. Students will also be required to complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students must be 18 years or older to apply for a student loan.

CVCC Amherst Center Hours

CVCC Bedford Center Summer Information

Summer operating hours for the CVCC Bedford Center are from 8 am – 5 pm on Monday – Thursday and 8 am – 12 pm on Friday from now until August 11. Counselors will be available during these hours to offer admissions and enrollment assistance, financial aid information, degree and transfer advising and payment processing. It is best to schedule an appointment to see a counselor, however walk-ins will be seen on a first come/first served basis. Compass placement testing for Math and English is available from 8 am – 3 pm on Monday –Thursday and 8 am – 10 am on Friday. No appointment is needed to take the compass test. For Students:All morning classes scheduled to begin PRIOR TO 10:00 a.m. are cancelled. All classes scheduled to begin AT OR AFTER 10:00 a.m. will meet as scheduled.

For Faculty/Staff:Faculty should report and be prepared to teach any classes scheduled to begin at or after 10:00 a.m. or arrive two hours after their normal arrival time (which ever is earlier). Administrators/staff should report to work two hours after their normal arrival time.

Fall Classes have Begun!

We are in the 2nd week of the Fall semester here at CVCC. I hope everyone had a great first week. Starting a new class can be a little scary and overwhelming even if this is not your first semester of college. To ensure a successful semester here are some tips recommended by Randall S. Hansen in his article "Your First Year of College: 25 Tips to Help You Survive and Thrive Your Freshman Year and Beyond".

1. Be Organized. In college the professors will give you a syllabus with due dates for all of your assignments. They expect you to remember those due dates. and typically won't remind you. Be sure to get a planner or organizer and write down your test dates and when papers are due, that way you can see what is coming in the next couple of weeks and you can plan out when you will study for your tests or work on your papers.

2. Find the ideal place for you to study. It is important to know where you study the best. It may in your room at home, or away from home in the library. Usually a place that has very little distraction is best. Check out the study rooms in the library in Bedford Hall.

3. Go to Class. This may sound like a silly tip, but some professors don't have an attendance policy. It may be tempting some days to sleep in or skip a class because it is a beautiful day outside. Avoid this temptation, you can't learn the material if you aren't in class. Professors cover a lot of valuable information in class, they also change due dates and test dates and if you aren't there to receive this information you may find yourself in trouble.

4. Meet with your professors. Your professors have office hours, usually they are listed on the door of their office and in the syllabus, they want you to use them. The reason for the office hours is to meet with students, if you have questions about the material you are studying go see your professor.

5. Visit your Acadmic Advisor. Advisors are here for you to help you schedule courses, add or drop classes, and decide majors. If you need help with something and you are not sure where to go, come see us and we will answer your questions and if we can't answer them we will put you in contact with someone that can.

Fall Tuition Due July 22rd!!!

Just a reminder that fall 2010 tuition is due by 5pm on Thursday, July 22nd. If tuition is not paid by this date your classes may be dropped. Students awarded financial aid should verify their award is sufficient to cover the cost of their tuition. Please log into the Student Information System using your MyCVCC account at: https://cvcc.my.vccs.edu/jsp/home.jsp to view your financial aid and account balances.

What should you expect the first time you meet with an Academic Advisor?

It is that time of year to start thinking about fall registration. CVCC begins registering for fall classes beginning April 9th, that is next Thursday!

If you are a new student to CVCC you may not be familiar with the registration process. That is what I want to cover in this week's post- getting started at CVCC!

Step One:
The first step in getting started at CVCC is to apply for admission online. You can apply here.

Step Two:
After you have applied to CVCC the next step will be to come in and take our placement test. The full test covers both math and English and you will need to take this before you will be able to sign up for fall classes. Here is more information abou the placement test.

Step Three:
Your next step will be to come in and speak to a counselor. At this meeting we will go over your placement test scores and talk about what your academic goals are. We will also set up a schedule that fits your needs and talk about what to expect your first semester in college.

Step Four:

In addition to the steps outlined above you will also want to apply for financial aid. You can apply at the Financial Aid website. You can apply for financial aid once you have applied to CVCC.

Spring Graduation Deadline

If you will be completing your course requirements for your program this spring the deadline to apply for graduation is Tuesday, March 9th. Please complete an Application for Graduation available int he Office of Admissions and Records (Amherst Hall, Room 2204) by this date. Our annual commencement ceremony will be held on Thursday, May 13th this year at the Liberty University Vines Center. Culinary Arts Program

CVCC is happy to announce two new programs beginning this fall. We will be offering an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Culinary Arts and Management and a Certificate in Culinary Arts.

The Associate in Applied Science degree in Culinary Arts and Management is a two year program designed to prepare individuals for careers in culinary arts, food service management and related occupations. Admission is competitive and based on grades, performance on the College’s placement test, interviews and a demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in Culinary Arts and Management. The deadline to apply to the program is May 14, 2010.

If you are interested in pursuing this degree please complete the following steps:
1. Apply to CVCC by visiting our website www.cvcc.vccs.edu
2. Submit high school and official college transcripts. If you have not taken college level math or English, you will need to take our placement test. The placement test is available Monday-Thursday from 8-5 and Friday 8-3 and is given on a walk-in basis. The placement test is a computer based test, the full test (math and English) costs seven dollars. The test is untimed and usually takes students two hours to complete.
3. After you have completed these steps you will need to schedule an appointment with a counselor so you can submit an application to the program. Please contact the counseling office at 832-7800 to set up an appointment.

The Certificate program in Culinary Arts is a two year part time program designed to provide a foundation in food production in the culinary arts field. Students interested in this certificate need to apply to CVCC and take the English placement test.

Withdrawal Deadline

The deadline to withdraw from a 16 week course for the spring semester is March 15.

If you withdraw from a course you will be awarded a "W" for that course. This will not affect your GPA. If you are on financial aid please contact the Financial Aid office at 832-7814 or visit them on campus in room 2100 in Amherst Hall to see how a "W" might affect your aid.

Summer Enrollment

We are currently enrolling for the summer session. Take a look at the course offerings for the summer semester here

Keep in mind the summer schedule is a different format than fall and spring. It is broken down into 1 ten week session and 2 five week sessions. This means the courses move very quickly so be sure you consider that when registering for classes.

Payment for summer classes is due April 22 by 5 pm.

RN to Paramedic Bridge Program

CVCC is now accepting applicants for the RN to Paramedic Bridge Program. There is limited enrollment and students must apply by March 15.

Applicants must have a current Registered Nurse License, be currently active as an RN or EMS provider, and have current EMT-Basic or higher EMS certification. If you are not currently an EMT, an accelerated course for RN's (EMT refresher course) will be offered April-June 2010, at CVCC.

120 hours of classroom and skills training
136 hours, minimum of clinical and field internship
two semesters, August 2010-May 2011
Class meets on Wednesday, 1730-2145 EST
Clinical and Field Internships will be scheduled around your work
You will earn 15 college credits
Tuition: approximately $ 1550 for the entire program
Limited enrollment. Only 18 student will be accepted

This program is designed to address areas of the National DOT Paramedic Curriculum not clearly addressed in RN curricula. Concentration will be placed on advanced airway management, pre-hospital patient assessment, trauma and medical emergency management. Pediatrics, hazardous material incidents, rescue and ambulance operations are also covered. The program will prepare the Rn for the National Registry paramedic examination.
